Course Description (Lecture Style Webinar): The concept of Extension for Prevention gets dentists excited. The thought of successfully preventing recurrent dental caries disease seems to be the goal of every dentist, and yet it appears just out of reach. While our restorations are designed to survive in secretions that may be downright caustic, we expect our patients to succeed in preventing the most prevalent disease on earth.
The success of operative dentistry is highly dependent upon the physiology, microbiology, and chemistry of the human mouth, yet these factors are often overlooked in clinical settings. Equipped with a newfound appreciation for modern cariology and appropriate therapeutic interventions, the prognosis of clinical dentistry can be dramatically improved. In a world that seems dedicated to disinfection and antibiotics, perhaps the oral environment will help illustrate that encouraging beneficial bacteria may be just as effective, if not more effective, than eradicating pathogens…what could possibly go wrong?
Objectives:
- Encourage the growth of commensal oral bacteria
- Modify patient behavior with improved communication skills
- Design restorations that resist recurrent decay
- Improve the prognosis of restorative treatment
