Hazard communications updates due June 1

May 4, 2016

Washington — Employers have until June 1 to update their written hazard communication programs and any alternative workplace labeling as well as provide additional employee training for newly identified physical or health hazards.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s hazard communication standard, which was revised in March 2012 to align with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, employers were required to train employees on new label elements (pictograms) and safety data sheets (formerly Materials Safety Data Sheets) by Dec. 1, 2013. The revised standard will be fully implemented June 1.
