Scholarship celebrates dentist's legacy of service
For Dr. Francis M. Foster Sr., dentistry wasn’t so much a job as it was a ministry. “A way to both give back and pay it forward,” recalled his daughter, Carmen Foster.
Foster made house calls to the infirm, the elderly and those in need.
“At times, our family received loads of fresh vegetables from rural patients in Goochland, Powhatan, Hanover and Chesterfield. Only later did we know that the fresh veggies were a different kind of dental insurance — their way to pay for dental services,” she said last week. “Dad expected each of us to treat everyone with dignity — not just the well-to-do, but particularly the struggling-to-do.”
