March 04, 2015

Effective July 1, 2015, dentists who dispense controlled substances in Schedule II (Percocet, Vicodin), Schedule III (Tylenol with Codeine), or Schedule IV (Valium, Xanax) must begin reporting the drugs dispensed to the Prescription Monitoring Program within 7 days of dispensing.  The reporting requirements in the Code of Virginia can be found by clicking HERE.

The 2015 General Assembly came to an end on February 28 and no doubt it will go down as one of the most amiable in recent memory; even adjourning early and passing several important pieces of legislation and significant budget amendments with relatively minimal public bickering.

Polio. Tuberculosis. Whooping cough.

In the 20th century, thanks to vaccines and drugs, these diseases were under control in the U.S. But the needle is moving again on infections worldwide among certain thought-to-be-contained diseases. One of them is measles.

The first signs of measles occur typically in the head and neck region and in the oral cavity. But some dentists may not have had the occasion to actually see these symptoms due to years of successful control of the disease.

Suffolk was invaded by loads of dental equipment, volunteers and smiling faces at last weekend's Suffolk Missions of Mercy Project.  More than 550 Tidewater residents met them on the gym floor of the Kings Fork Middle School.  This project marks the 80th M.O.M. Project in Virginia.  In 2014 alone, MOM projects served over 3,400 patients and completed over 18,800 dental procedures all with the help of volunteers, donors, and sponsors!

Law360, New York (February 25, 2015, 10:14 AM ET) -- The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that state professional boards controlled by active market participants must be supervised by state governments to avoid federal antitrust scrutiny, siding with the Federal Trade Commission in a dispute with North Carolina's dental board.

In a 6-3 ruling, the justices concluded that the state action doctrine does not protect the North Carolina State Board of Dental Examiners from the FTC's challenge to its policy blocking nondentists from offering teeth-whitening services.
