Interest rates on federally subsidized Stafford loans for graduate students recently went from 5.41 to 6.21 percent. These rates are set for the academic year every July 1 and are effective through June 30 of the following year.

Congress last year changed the way the rates are set, basing them on the interest rate earned by the 10-year Treasury note, and a fixed percentage depending on the type of loan. Unlike with loans with private lenders, these loan rates are fixed for the life of the loan.

DentaQuest, the dental benefits administrator for Virginia's Smiles for Children program, has committed $25,000 to the VDA Foundation's 2014-2015 Mission of Mercy projects.  "MOM is an important part of the Commonwealth's dental safety net, and we are proud to continue our support of this important outreach program," said Kristen Gilliam, Virginia Project Director for DentaQuest.

Small businesses, such as dental practices, can be easy targets for fraud.  Recently, an member's practice reported a potential scam relating to military patient billing.  The information said that the practice needed to recertify and pay $500 in order to continue billing services for military patients.  The office manager realized that her certification WAS due to lapse but that she normally recertifies for FREE.

That is why the Virginia Dental Association is looking to secure funding for a pilot study that could lead to the development of a long term solution to the dental care issues faced by many residents of long term care facilities.

Chicago — “The American Dental Association (ADA) and the dental community send their condolences to the family of Dr. Alison P. Riddle-Fletcher, D.D.S., upon her untimely passing,” said Charles H. Norman, D.D.S. Dr. Riddle-Fletcher, who was the president of the National Dental Association (NDA), died July 1 at the age of 55.

“Dr. Riddle-Fletcher dedicated her life to helping others on a local and national level,” said Dr. Norman. “Her contributions to her community and dentistry will be missed.”

On July 1st, the Virginia Dental Association (represented by Laura Givens, Director of Legislative and Public Policy and Leslie Pinkston, Director of Membership) presented the doctors from Commonwealth Endodontics with a sketch of the Virginia State Capitol Building signed by Speaker of the House Bill Howell.  This gift was to express the VDA's appreciation for their generous contributions to the Virginia Dental Political Action Committee (VADPAC).  Each of the doctors, Dr. Steve Barbieri, Dr. Ronald Vranas, Dr. Timothy Finkler, Dr. Madelyn Gambrel, Dr.
