It’s been called an “epidemic,” the poor state of teeth and gums among the nearly 1.4-million nursing home residents in the United States. That is why the Virginia Dental Association is looking to secure funding for a pilot study that could lead to the development of a long term solution to the dental care issues faced by many residents of long term care facilities.

Chicago — “The American Dental Association (ADA) and the dental community send their condolences to the family of Dr. Alison P. Riddle-Fletcher, D.D.S., upon her untimely passing,” said Charles H. Norman, D.D.S. Dr. Riddle-Fletcher, who was the president of the National Dental Association (NDA), died July 1 at the age of 55.

“Dr. Riddle-Fletcher dedicated her life to helping others on a local and national level,” said Dr. Norman. “Her contributions to her community and dentistry will be missed.”

The appointees will join McAuliffe’s administration focused on finding common ground with members of both parties on issues that will grow Virginia’s economy and create more jobs across the Commonwealth.

Dr. Frank P. Iuorno Jr. of West End Orthodontics, who is head of the Virginia Dental Association Access to Care Task Force, recently led an effort to provide dental care to residents of Envoy of Westover Hills, a long-term-care facility in Richmond.

More than two dozen dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants and administrators participated in the daylong clinic that offered oral screenings to the facility’s residents. Iuorno talked about what they hoped to accomplish.
