Dr. Bob and Martha McGrail hosted a reception for Speaker Bill Howell at their home in Fredericksburg on April 21.  Dr. John and Karen Rose served as co-hosts and other members helping with the event were Dr. Matt Caspersen, Dr. John and Linda Coker, Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd Moss, Jr. and Dr. Lloyd Moss, III.  The Speaker represents the 28th district of Virginia, which includes the City of Fredericksburg and parts of Stafford County.

On March 26, 2015, U.S. Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) released introduced H.R. 1677, the Dental Insurance Fairness Act of 2015.  Congressman Gosar was joined by twenty-one other cosponsors in introducing this bipartisan legislation to help improve quality access of dental healthcare.  One of the cosponsors is Virginia Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA 9th District).  We encourage you to contact your Representative and ask him or her to sign on as a sponsor.

Introduced in the Governor’s budget, Medicaid coverage for pregnant women was approved by the General Assembly.  The program took effect March 1, 2015 for pregnant women who are 21 and over and enrolled in a Medicaid and FAMIS.

The 2015 General Assembly came to an end on February 28 and no doubt it will go down as one of the most amiable in recent memory; even adjourning early and passing several important pieces of legislation and significant budget amendments with relatively minimal public bickering.

Over 120 dentists and VCU dental students gathered very early for the annual VDA Day on the Hill on Friday, January 16.  Breakfast was held at the Omni in downtown Richmond where they heard from their fellow VDA member dentist Dr. Todd Pillion who is now a new member of the VA House of Delegates.  They also heard from VDA President Dr. Mike Link, VADPAC Chairman Dr. Bruce Hutchison and VDA Lobbyist Chuck Duvall.  After breakfast, the group headed up the hill to visit with their legislators at the General Assembly building.

Over 100 dentists and dental students will be attending the annual VDA Legislative Day on the Hill this Friday, January 16.  This is one of the most important days of the year for the VDA as we are able to advocate for the profession of dentistry and our patients in a large group at the General Assembly Building.  It’s all about strength in numbers! 

There are two key ingredients to successful legislative efforts: Relationships and Money.
