National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Initiative

April 11, 2014

Turn in your unused or expired medication for sale disposal on Saturday, April 26, 2014 10:00am-2:00pm

Prescription drug abuse is the fastest growing drug problem in the United States. DEA characterizes this initiative as a vital public safety and public health issue. Prescription drugs that languish in home medicine cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. According to the 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high; more Americans (6.8 million) currently abuse prescription drugs than the number of those using cocaine, heroin, hallucinogens like LSD and inhalants (sniffed household products) combined. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Therefore, it is important for prescription drugs to be disposed of properly to help reduce the risk of prescription drug diversion and abuse.
