Two health care entities paid settlements to the federal government after possibly violating the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act when unencrypted laptops were stolen.

An unencrypted laptop was stolen from one of Concentra Health Services' facilities, the Springfield Missouri Physical Therapy Center, resulting in a $1,725,220 fine. QCA Health Plan Inc., of Arkansas, reported that an unencrypted laptop was stolen from a workforce member's car. The company agreed to a $250,000 settlement.

On August 19th,  there were three special elections in Virginia.  The Democrats, as expected, were successful in keeping both seats they had in the House of Delegates.  Joe Lindsey (D-Norfolk) easily won the 90th District seat held by Algie Howell for over a decade and Rip Sullivan (D-Arlington) handily defeated his Republican opponent in the 48th District which was formerly held by Bob Brink.  Both are expected to be seated during the Special Session scheduled for mid-September in Richmond.

The Virginia Dental Association has witnessed the exponential growth of dental student indebtedness and its effects on the state of current dentistry. In 2014, following years of support for dental student scholarships and with a desire to decrease the burden of student debt, the leadership of the VDA generously and graciously established an endowed scholarship at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry.

In response to member questions, the ADA Practice Institute has put together the following Q&A to help clarify which practitioners should opt in or out of Medicare.

Dentists who treat Medicare patients must either enroll in the program or opt out in order to prescribe medication to their qualifying patients with Part D drug plans.

In a statement, the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs said it will continue to closely monitor and evaluate existing and new scientific information on triclosan as it becomes available. The ADA also recommended that individuals continue to follow FDA recommendations on the use of oral health care products that contain the chemical. The FDA’s November 2013 Consumer Update states that the FDA does not have sufficient safety evidence to recommend changing consumer use of products that contain triclosan at this time.
