Wytheville Community College has named its dental lab in Galax Hall in honor of three Wytheville dentists, two of whom are alumni of WCC.

The dental lab will be known as the “Campbell, Throckmorton, & Copenhaver Dental Lab,” in recognition of the tremendous support of Drs. O.J. Campbell, Dennis R. Throckmorton, and Richard G. Copenhaver. Over the years, the trio has provided professional and financial support of the WCC Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting programs, as well as funded numerous scholarships to WCC students.

As reported in the ADA News, the ADA contacted the Centers for Disease Control in early September about the Ebola issue, and the CDC’s guidance to dental professionals remains the same now as then:

CDC works with partners at ports of entry into the United States to help prevent infectious diseases, like Ebola, from being introduced and spread in the United States.

Carol Summerhays, D.D.S., a general dentist in in San Diego, is the new president-elect of the American Dental Association (ADA). Dr. Summerhays was recently elected during a meeting of the ADA House of Delegates in San Antonio. She will assume the role of president of the ADA in November 2015, when she will lead the 158,000-member organization, America’s leading advocate for oral health.

San Antonio, Texas — The ADA House of Delegates Oct. 14 said "yes" to a 2015 operating budget with $136,077,000 in revenues and $128,271,000 in expenses and income taxes. With the transfer $7.2 million to the Insurance Royalty Reserve, the projected 2015 operating surplus will be $606,087.

They also said "yes" to keeping 2015 national dues at the same level as 2014: $522.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court seemed to have little problem Tuesday concluding that a state board dominated by dentists should not get to decide who can perform teeth-whitening services.

But when it comes to brain surgery, many of the same justices said they would rather empower neurologists than bureaucrats.

Cigna will launch in 2015 what it calls a cost-effectiveness designation program that rates in-network dentists based on cost and utilization patterns.

These ratings will appear as stars within Cigna's provider directory. According to Cigna, dentists who receive a three-star rating have a fee schedule that results in greater potential cost savings within their geographical area..

The ADA believes the methodology Cigna is using is scientifically flawed.

A Mass Meeting will be held to choose the candidate for the Fourth District House of Delegates seat at Castlewood High School this Saturday, October 4th.  Registration will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. and the Mass Meeting will take place at 6:00 p.m. All registered voters are welcome to participate.
