The Donated Dental Services (DDS) program has hit a major milestone!  Thanks to our amazing volunteers the DDS program has provided just over $10 million in treatment to 3,303 Virginians during our last quarter.  For those of you who don’t know, DDS has been a successful outreach program here at the VDAF since 1997.

When the Virginia Department of Health cut its dental program a few years ago, the Franklin County Health Department teamed with the Free Clinic of Franklin County to continue providing basic dental extractions for needy patients at the Health Department.  This month, the Health Department gave us their dental operatory and tools to provide extractions at our new building in Schewel’s Plaza in Rocky Mount, but is no longer able to help with staffing due to further state budget cuts.

Interest rates on federally subsidized Stafford loans for graduate students recently went from 5.41 to 6.21 percent. These rates are set for the academic year every July 1 and are effective through June 30 of the following year.

Congress last year changed the way the rates are set, basing them on the interest rate earned by the 10-year Treasury note, and a fixed percentage depending on the type of loan. Unlike with loans with private lenders, these loan rates are fixed for the life of the loan.

New dentists and leaders from the 16th District gathered at the 16th District New Dentist Dinner held at Lydia's in Kansas City during the ADA New Dentist Conference.  Special guests included Dr. Chuck Norman (ADA President) and Dr. Hal Fair (ADA 16th District Trustee from South Carolina).

DentaQuest, the dental benefits administrator for Virginia's Smiles for Children program, has committed $25,000 to the VDA Foundation's 2014-2015 Mission of Mercy projects.  "MOM is an important part of the Commonwealth's dental safety net, and we are proud to continue our support of this important outreach program," said Kristen Gilliam, Virginia Project Director for DentaQuest.

Small businesses, such as dental practices, can be easy targets for fraud.  Recently, an member's practice reported a potential scam relating to military patient billing.  The information said that the practice needed to recertify and pay $500 in order to continue billing services for military patients.  The office manager realized that her certification WAS due to lapse but that she normally recertifies for FREE.
