“Dental Care Approaches for Adults with Disabilities” is a free two-day continuing education course for actively practicing general dentists and auxiliary staff wishing to improve their skills in caring for adults with special health care needs (ASHCN). Dr. Matthew Cooke, a pediatric dentist and the Director of Healthy Athletes, Special Olympics of Virginia, will present a full-day lecture on day one, covering several topics related to dental treatment for ASHCN, including but not limited to: an overview of special health care conditions; patient behavioral guidance techniques; and, oral health assessment and prevention. Kami A. Piscitelli, RDH, Virginia Department of Health Special Needs Oral Health Coordinator, will provide a brief presentation regarding oral hygiene considerations for dental providers treating this population. On day two, participants will practice what they have learned in a hands-on clinical session on the following Saturday. Teaching methods include lecture, role-play, hands-on clinical training, and question and answer. All participants must be Virginia-based licensed, practicing dentists or dental staff. Dentistry training and licensure is required to participate. The speakers have no relevant financial relationships to disclose.
