Dr. Randy Adams, a local Pediatric Dentist in Richmond, assumed the role as President of the Old Dominion Dental Society (ODDS) in December 2012. The past President is Dr. Jim Watkins of Hampton. Dr. Adams begins his presidency as the ODDS is preparing to celebrate its 100-year anniversary. Plans are to honor the early ODDS pioneers by focusing on a continuous model to raise the quality of the dental profession. Dr.
CHICAGO, March 29, 2013 – In light of recent news reports concerning a Tulsa, Okla.-based oral surgeon, the American Dental Association (ADA) understands that there may be heightened interest in infection control procedures. Regulations for dental office inspections are determined on a state by state basis by the state dental board.

The ADA is closely monitoring a news story involving the investigation of a Tulsa, Okla., oral surgeon for allegedly poor infection control practices and delegation of dental procedures.

The Access to Care Task Force has been awarded a grant from the ADA State Public Affairs (SPA) program. The Task Force will be using these funds to conduct a number of focus groups to glean important insights about dental care, public perception of the importance of dental health and the use of technology in healthcare decision making.
Most covered entity dental practices will need to review and revise their HIPAA compliance policies, procedures and documents such as Notice of Privacy Practices and Business Associate Agreements to comply by Sept. 23 with regulations effective March 26.

By now, we all know about the bisphosponates and their potential for osteonecrosis of the jaw. There is a relatively new (approved by the FDA in June 2010) class of medication known as RANKL inhibitors which can be every bit as problematic as the IV Bisphosphonates. The medications are either injected monthly for certain cancer treatments or every six months for osteoporosis.

On Friday March 8th the group representing the proposed Bluefield College Dental School met with VDA leadership as well as Component 6 dentists. The Bluefield College/Tazewell County group included: Dr. David Olive, President of Bluefield College; Dr. Karen West¸ Dean of the UNLV School of Dentistry and consultant to Bluefield College; Mr. Jim Spencer, Tazewell County - County Administrator and Dr. Carole Pratt, Bluefield College consultant.
