Washington – The ADA and Virginia Dental Association executive directors thanked CMS Administrator Marilyn Tavenner for hosting a Jan. 8 discussion of Medicaid and Medicare policy issues important to the profession.

Over 100 dentists and dental students will be attending the annual VDA Legislative Day on the Hill this Friday, January 16.  This is one of the most important days of the year for the VDA as we are able to advocate for the profession of dentistry and our patients in a large group at the General Assembly Building.  It’s all about strength in numbers! 

There are two key ingredients to successful legislative efforts: Relationships and Money.

The Virginia Dental Association will join several other states in hosting the 2015 Ski and Learn Seminar at Big Sky Resort in Big Sky, Montana. The meeting begins on Wednesday, March 18 and continues through Wednesday, March 25. Other state dental associations who have co-sponsored the trip include Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Tennessee. 

This will be our eleventh consecutive trip to Big Sky. Nearly fifty dentists from nine states participated in the 2014 trip.

In 1982, Dr. Francis G. "Frank" Serio took a leap of faith, making a one-man mission trip to provide dental care in a remote region of the Dominican Republic. Today, that first small step has grown into a dental charity that has provided care to thousands of residents in poor rural areas of that country and beyond. The Dominican Dental Mission Project is just one example of how Dr. Serio has touched and improved the lives of countless people through volunteerism and education.

Northern Virginia Dental Society members gathered with several legislators from the area on December 7 for a special holiday brunch, which was hosted by the Society.  The event was a great opportunity for members to thank legislators for their support and discuss what to expect in the upcoming General Assembly session.

The Virginia Dental Association is pleased to share the news that Dr. Todd Pillion, a VDA member dentist, won the 4th district seat in the Virginia House of Delegates in a special election on December 9.  The VDA wishes Dr. Pillion the best of luck and looks forward to visiting with him next month as he begins his first General Assembly session.  Below are articles relating to his election victory as well as the announcement from Speaker Bill Howell.

While honoring its immediate past president, Dr. David Whiston, the ADA Foundation kicked off a new award in his name at a Thursday evening meet-and-greet. 

The ADAF organized the event as a way for friends and supporters to honor Dr. Whiston and ADAF volunteers and to usher in the Dr. David Whiston Leadership Program, the new award established in his name. Dr. Whiston served as ADA Foundation president 2010-14.
