A team of experienced dentists, hygienists and other volunteers will begin a yearlong effort on May 1 to demonstrate the value of preventive dental care for seniors in long-term care facilities.  

The Virginia Dental Association (VDA) will that day commence a pilot program at 10 a.m. EST at Trinity Mission Health & Rehab, 1150 Northwest Drive in Charlottesville.

Effective July 1, 2015, dentists who dispense controlled substances in Schedule II (Percocet, Vicodin), Schedule III (Tylenol with Codeine), or Schedule IV (Valium, Xanax) must begin reporting the drugs dispensed to the Prescription Monitoring Program within 7 days of dispensing.  The reporting requirements in the Code of Virginia can be found by clicking HERE.

Dr. Bob and Martha McGrail hosted a reception for Speaker Bill Howell at their home in Fredericksburg on April 21.  Dr. John and Karen Rose served as co-hosts and other members helping with the event were Dr. Matt Caspersen, Dr. John and Linda Coker, Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd Moss, Jr. and Dr. Lloyd Moss, III.  The Speaker represents the 28th district of Virginia, which includes the City of Fredericksburg and parts of Stafford County.

ADA President-Elect Dr. Carol Summerhays of CA visited the VCU School of Dentistry yesterday for Clinic Day. She spoke to students on the future of dentistry and the important role they'll play in that future as leaders.

A final rule was published by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) in 2014 that requires practitioners who prescribe Part D covered drugs to be enrolled in Medicare or opt out for those prescriptions to be covered under Part D.  This means that neither the practitioner, nor the beneficiary submits the bill to Medicare for services rendered. Instead, the beneficiary pays the physician out-of-pocket and neither party is reimbursed by Medicare.

VDA member Dr. Rob Strauss was awarded as the 2015 recipient of the Virginia Society of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (VSOMS) Distinguished Service Award in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  VSOMS President, Dr. Jim Solomon and VSOMS Executive Council Member and friend of Dr. Strauss’, Dr. Brian McAndrew, presented him with the award on behalf of VSOMS during the VSOMS 2015 Annual Meeting at the Westin Virginia Beach Town Center.  The Distinguished Service award is the highest tribute that the Society can pay to a VSOMS member.  Dr.
