Dr. Todd Pillion, VDA member dentist, is running for the House of Delegates for the Fourth District House of Delegate Seat. The Virginia Dental Political Action Committee (VADPAC) is hosting a fundraiser for Dr. Pillion on October 30 at Heartwood in Abingdon from 6:30-8:30pm.  A fundraiser is also being held in Richmond at the Virginia Auto Dealers Association on Friday, October 31 from 8:00-9:00 a.m.

Dr. Charlie Cuttino and Dr. Anne Adams hosted a VDA fundraiser for Delegate John O’Bannon at their home on September 12. A practicing physician, Delegate O’Bannon is one of only a handful of health care providers serving in the General Assembly.  Delegate O’Bannon has a record of collegial public service and a willingness to consider divergent views in reviewing legislation.  He represents House District 73, which encompasses parts of both Henrico County and the City of Richmond.

Earlier this month, VDA members were given the opportunity to submit questions and concerns regarding the Board of Dentistry’s sedation permits and plans for the permit holder inspections.  These permit requirements and unannounced inspections will only be affecting those dentists who administer moderate/conscious sedation and general anesthesia/deep sedation.

On August 19th,  there were three special elections in Virginia.  The Democrats, as expected, were successful in keeping both seats they had in the House of Delegates.  Joe Lindsey (D-Norfolk) easily won the 90th District seat held by Algie Howell for over a decade and Rip Sullivan (D-Arlington) handily defeated his Republican opponent in the 48th District which was formerly held by Bob Brink.  Both are expected to be seated during the Special Session scheduled for mid-September in Richmond.

Medicare and medical insurance in dentistry for the last few years until now was an optional decision.
Did you know that The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services published a final rule in May that requires all physicians and eligible professionals—including dentists—who prescribe Part D covered drugs to be enrolled in Medicare or opt out for those prescriptions to be covered under Part D?

The VDA informed members with a standalone email and in an electronic newsletter The Chatter back in April that regulations pertaining to sedation and anesthesia permits were published and would become effective on May 7, 2014.

On July 1st, the Virginia Dental Association (represented by Laura Givens, Director of Legislative and Public Policy and Leslie Pinkston, Director of Membership) presented the doctors from Commonwealth Endodontics with a sketch of the Virginia State Capitol Building signed by Speaker of the House Bill Howell.  This gift was to express the VDA's appreciation for their generous contributions to the Virginia Dental Political Action Committee (VADPAC).  Each of the doctors, Dr. Steve Barbieri, Dr. Ronald Vranas, Dr. Timothy Finkler, Dr. Madelyn Gambrel, Dr.

The ADA Council on Dental Education and Licensure is considering proposed revisions to the ADA Guidelines for the Use of Sedation and General Anesthesia by Dentists and the ADA Guidelines for Teaching Pain Control and Sedation to Dentists and Dental Students and seeking comment from our communities of interest.
